Jes Rivas
Founder and Principal
Jes Rivas is a seasoned building systems engineer with over 18 years of experience in energy technology assessment, market development, and evaluation. Her expertise encompasses a broad spectrum of utility and customer-side technologies, with a particular focus on emerging technologies, electrification strategies, demand response, distributed energy resources, and grid-edge innovations.
As the former Executive Vice President at ILLUME Advising, Jes led the development of business strategies and spearheaded innovation within the industry. She has been instrumental in guiding clients through the complexities of policy shifts, funding opportunities, and the diversification of research and development pipelines. Her approach emphasizes technical rigor, community and industry partnership, and the pursuit of accessible energy solutions.
Jes is also recognized for her contributions to the energy sector’s thought leadership. She has authored numerous papers and presented on holistic approaches to research and development, market shaping, and achieving scalable market adoption. She is a Voting Member of the Pacific Northwest Power Council’s Regional Technical Forum and Board member of the International Energy Program Evaluation Conference.
SCOTT HACKEL, PE, LEED AP
Principal
Scott Hackel is an engineering leader with more than 20 years of experience advancing building decarbonization, grid-interactive systems, and applied research. His expertise spans strategic electrification, advanced building controls, energy codes and standards, and the development of scalable pilot programs that integrate technical innovation with measurable impact.
Most recently, as Vice President of Research at Slipstream, Scott led a multidisciplinary team of more than 30 researchers and engineers, expanding the organization’s research portfolio and mission impact. He has directed complex field pilots across multiple states, partnered with utilities and federal agencies, and contributed to national industry guidance through organizations such as ASHRAE. His work consistently bridges technical rigor, policy alignment, and real-world implementation.
Scott is widely recognized for his ability to translate complex building science and grid integration concepts into actionable strategy. A licensed Professional Engineer and LEED Accredited Professional, he serves in advisory roles supporting code advancement, electrification initiatives, and strategic decarbonization efforts. His leadership reflects a deep commitment to advancing clean energy solutions that are technically sound, equitable, and scalable.
Maass
Research Manager
Maass is a researcher and evaluator with nearly a decade of experience focused on energy efficiency and transportation electrification initiatives within the utility sector. She leads complex research projects, as well as the development and administration of multidisciplinary R&D initiatives. She is an adept and organized project manager who provides strong and supportive team leadership to deliver work on time and on budget. Maass’ topical experience ranges from residential HVAC and water heating technologies to transportation electrification, new construction programs, and the water-energy nexus. Her background in sustainability and urban planning inspires her work in the utility sector with the perpetual goal of creating more resilient communities.
